ToolWatch System Provides Dramatic Results for Turner Industries—Cost Control and Accountability Allow Turner Projects to Stay on Budget and on Time
Turner Industries, Ltd. is a leading industrial services company with projects in the US and abroad. The company provides full turnaround and shutdown services for refinery, petrochemical, power generating, and paper and pulp facilities.
Based in the Gulf South, Turner is ranked 56th among ENR Magazine's top 400 and 353rd in the Forbes 500.
With more than 10,000 craft employees in the field and five regional warehouses, Turner's 15 allied companies manages hundreds of thousands of tools. Annually the company deploys personnel and equipment to between 50 and 60 jobsites.
In searching for a tool management solution, Turner looked for a system that would enable them to manage their tool inventory by controlling loss, damage and theft, and allowing accountability by employee. The company also needed to manage their vast tool inventory between regional warehouses and control project costs by providing more efficient interfaces between tool warehouses and jobsites.
"We looked at several tool tracking products, but ToolWatch offered us the most control and flexibility," said Patrick Thompson, Turner's Vice President and Chief Information Officer. "We implemented ToolWatch in late 1997, and we've recovered our initial investment ten fold."
During one project for one of the largest petrochemical and refining companies in the US, Turner reduced tool loss by 96 percent. Said Mr. Thompson, "Our clients won't waste time and money on turnarounds and shutdowns so the contractor selected is the one that can demonstrate a proven track record of safety, performance and cost control."
Turner tracks tools to individual employees, creating an efficient audit trail by using the ToolWatch Pen to scan individual's hard hats and identification badges. In addition to Turner's employees, the company works with a variety of subcontractors and the ToolWatch System allows equipment managers to track tools by subcontractor, and even to the sub's employees.
Said Thompson, "In our business we use hand tools and larger equipment, like welding machines. The loss of tools, damaged tools and the theft of tools have all been significantly reduced and we realized a return on our investment within the first few months. We simply had to have a mechanism for controlling loss and ToolWatch has exceeded our expectations."
