As projects continue to become scarcer and less profitable, tool-intensive organizations are looking internally for cost improvement opportunities that can deliver immediate and significant bottom-line improvements. By implementing ToolWatch—which includes a set of processes and affordable technology to better track tools and equipment — many of these organizations are able to reduce tool costs by 50 to 80 percent within a matter of months.
Organizations using ToolWatch continually report that within weeks of using the application, tool retention shoots up to at least 90 percent. The reason? Tools are suddenly returned on time.Field workers start taking better care of the tools assigned to them. And tools that have not been seen for a long time "miraculously" start showing up.
Tracking materials and consumables is a tedious but critical task in most construction organizations. Paper and spreadsheet systems are not only labor-intensive, they’re also error-prone. ToolWatch streamlines and automates your material and consumable management processes, leading to improved accountability, reduced waste, optimized inventory levels, reduced paperwork, less manual tracking and counting, and improved billing accuracy.
For many organizations, strict adherence to a tool inspection and calibration schedule is mandatory and regulated by agencies such as OSHA. Companies can be held responsible if they fail to comply or are unable to prove compliance. The tool inspection and calibration software functionality of ToolWatch helps ensure that your tool, equipment and fleet repairs are always performed on time. And automated and detailed records of calibrations and inspections enable you meet regulatory requirements.

ToolWatch Enterprise to Track Tools, Equipment in London Thames Tunnel Project
Enterprise tool management leader partners with Hochtief/Murphy for $306 million Crossrail construction award
DENVER, May 18, 2012 — ToolWatch Corporation will implement the full ToolWatch Enterprise suite on the London Crossrail C-310 Thames Tunnel contract. The $306 million contract is part of the $22.5 billion London Crossrail project that will connect the east and west London rail routes. The project will use the Enterprise suite to track heavy equipment, machinery (or plant), vehicles and tools, as well as monitor equipment servicing schedules and fuel consumption.
Hochtief/Murphy, a joint venture between worldwide construction giant Hochtief Solutions and U.K.-based civil engineering firm J Murphy & Sons Limited, is the principal contractor on the project. Hochtief/Murphy selected ToolWatch after conducting an extensive global search for a solution that best fit its diverse needs, including comprehensive tool and equipment tracking and management features, real-time access at anytime from anywhere, and a secure, centralized database.
"The Crossrail project is the largest construction project currently under way in Europe and the U.K., and the scope of the Thames Tunnel contract demands that we have the capability to keep strict control over every item, from small to large, accurately and instantaneously. ToolWatch Enterprise will give us the macro- and micro-level knowledge we need to keep the project on track and on budget," said Martin Edwards, Plant and Senior Office Manager of the Thames Tunnel project for Hochtief/Murphy.
When completed in 2018, Crossrail will connect 37 rail stations, including Heathrow airport, and is estimated to serve more than 200 million passengers per year. The 2.6 kilometer Thames Tunnel project will connect the district of Plumstead to North Woolwich and link the existing North Kent rail line to Crossrail.
"We are happy to be working with Hochtief/Murphy, and we are proud of ToolWatch's key role on the Crossrail Thames Tunnel contract," said Don Kafka, ToolWatch president. "This is the single largest project ToolWatch has undertaken in the U.K. to date, and we hope it has opened the doors to other joint venture partnerships with Hochtief/Murphy and future projects in the U.K."
About Hochtief/Murphy Joint Venture
The joint venture between the German-based Hochtief Solutions AG, the eighth largest construction company in the world, and U.K.-based J Murphy & Sons Limited began in 2011 when awarded the C-310 Thames Tunnel contract, one of 15 sub-projects within the massive Crossrail project. Hochtief/Murphy is constructing two tunnels and portal structures with a total length of around 2.6 kilometers in southeast London. The $306 million Thames Tunnel contract is scheduled for completion in the second quarter of 2015.
About Crossrail

Founded in 1991, ToolWatch is the world's leading provider of tool, equipment, materials and consumables management systems. Combining easy-to-use ToolWatch data collection devices with a powerful database system, its technology enables the tracking and management of construction resources throughout an entire organization, delivering significant savings of both time and money to companies of all sizes. ToolWatch Announces its “Cloud” Platform
ToolWatch Enterprise customers can now access data and track tools from anywhere using cloud-based software
DENVER, May 24, 2011 —ToolWatch Corporation’s Enterprise solution, a comprehensive system for managing tools, equipment, materials and consumables, is now available “in the cloud.” The cloud is a web-based platform that resides not on a company’s server but rather remotely in the Internet “cloud,” where it is stored in cyberspace and accessible to authorized users whenever needed.
“ToolWatch has actually been using the cloud since launching the on-demand feature of ToolWatch Enterprise in 2007,” said Don Kafka, CEO of ToolWatch. “But today the Internet has become a common network for more and more companies, so it made sense to make this feature available to all customers. It’s very cost-effective, because minimal internal support is needed, and it’s highly secure, with virtually 100 percent availability. Customers can access and manage their data from anywhere at any time.”
Now, ToolWatch stores clients’ tool and equipment data in the cloud. As customers change, update or manipulate their data from their desktop Enterprise application, it instantaneously syncs up with data stored in the cloud. Authorized users within the client’s company can log in and access real-time data, updates and information from anywhere in the world.
Cloud computing provides accurate resource management and reduces the potential for tool and equipment loss, eliminating costly and unnecessary purchases. It establishes accountability for successful asset management, and its sophisticated disaster recovery and data storage capabilities assure that accurate information is always available for making sound business decisions.
“A perfect example of how our customers will benefit from the cloud is an iPhone and Android app, in development, that connects a field employee to our Enterprise system. The app allows a person to ‘start the clock’ when they begin using a piece of equipment and stop billing for its use immediately when finished. Thus avoiding the unnecessary and often costly charges,” said Kafka.
ToolWatch Releases Application Programming Interface
ToolWatch gives users access to deep data and flexibility to integrate with other corporate applications.
DENVER, March 8, 2011 — ToolWatch Corporation recently released its Application Programming Interface (API) to give users of ToolWatch Enterprise and other ToolWatch products access to their behind-the-scenes data. The API enables integration with clients’ proprietary accounting and billing systems or with off-the-shelf packages. Now, ToolWatch customers have greater flexibility integrating ToolWatch data into other internal corporate software applications.
“It became clear to us that our clients needed a streamlined application to bridge Enterprise and their other software systems,” said Don Kafka, president of ToolWatch. “With the ever-changing business landscape, it was important that we give our clients the flexibility to access ToolWatch data across all mediums and not limit them to the Enterprise desktop application.”
The ToolWatch API is designed for mid-size to large companies with tens of thousands of tools to manage, complex accounting processes, and in-house programming staff that want to eliminate cumbersome manual processes that slow down communication among various in-house systems.
“Some clients have tens of thousands of records — cost centers, billing records, for example — within their ToolWatch database,” said Jason Watts, a ToolWatch software developer. “Manually updating these records can be time consuming and error prone. The API opens the possibility for our customers to automate the maintenance of their data.”
The API is now available to all ToolWatch customers, and functionalities can be customized depending on clients’ needs. Current ToolWatch software users can request access to the API by calling ToolWatch at 1.800-676-4034. Typically, access rights can be granted within 24 hours.

"Using a tool and equipment tracking system lets us locate under-utilized equipment so we can reduce our capital spending," said Scott Sciotto, equipment operations manager for Matrix Service Industrial Contractors. "We hope to increase our utilization from 20 percent to closer to 60 percent with the ToolWatch Enterprise system in place."
Matrix originally implemented ToolWatch SE, a tool and equipment tracking system ideal for single-location construction companies, at its Tulsa operation. As the company expanded its services in Delaware, Pennsylvania and New Jersey, Sciotto realized it was necessary to manage tool and equipment information in one
on-demand, centralized database - so they upgraded to Enterprise. The company has plans to expand the system to several other locations next year.

ToolWatch Announced Addition to Customer Base
Cianbro adopts enterprise tool and equipment management system to simplify tool, equipment and consumable tracking
Cianbro is a 60-year-old, employee-owned construction company with more than 2,000 employees in seven locations along the eastern seaboard. Cianbro’s equipment arm owns an equipment fleet consisting of approximately 3,300 pieces valued at more than $66 million. Cianbro Equipment supports customers by making sure the proper equipment is available and ready for rapid mobilization on projects ranging from bridges and an oil refinery to shopping malls and module construction.
"Cianbro needed to retire its legacy system and implement a hosted solution to avoid the overhead an installed system requires," said Dale Thomas, IT director for Cianbro. "We needed a flexible system that would keep up with our sophisticated processes for transferring tools and equipment between job sites and simplify our invoicing process. Simply put, Enterprise fit the bill."
ToolWatch collaborated with Cianbro to optimize its architecture to support Cianbro's need to manage its heavy transaction volume by synchronizing data between the server and PCs on the server side, reducing the time needed to transfer data from several hours to just a few seconds. ToolWatch’s SaaS removes the need for an internal IT department with programmers to manage system updates and maintenance.
"ToolWatch worked closely with Cianbro during the implementation of our system to ensure it met their short- and long-term tool and equipment management needs," said Don Kafka, chief executive officer of ToolWatch. "Our job cost and billing module will simplify Cianbro's accounting process and improve their return on investment."

This added feature will increase project profitability and generate accurate and detailed billing information for customers.
ToolWatch provides software for managing tools, equipment and materials both in the warehouse and on site to construction organizations of all sizes. Its Enterprise software manages tool, equipment and materials to improve construction processes and boost companies’ bottom lines. The easy-to-use job cost and billing module maximizes control over company resources including loss prevention.
ToolWatch Enterprise job cost and billing module provides these key features:
Founded in 1991, ToolWatch is the world's leading provider of tool, equipment, materials and consumables management systems. ToolWatch Enterprise Combines Key Technologies to Create Unique Abilities for Clients
DENVER, COLO., May 27, 2008—ToolWatch Enterprise, the construction industry's first on-demand construction resource management system, has joined several powerful technologies in a unique way to create an application that is easy for both users and IT staff, reliable and secure. Built on Microsoft’s .NET Framework, ToolWatch Enterprise incorporates smart client deployment, SQL Server Compact Edition and SQL Server 2005 Enterprise with merge replication. The system was created by ToolWatch, a company that provides software for managing tools, equipment and materials both in the warehouse and on site to organizations of all sizes.
"The combination of technologies used in ToolWatch Enterprise is a first, not only in the construction industry, but in database systems in general," said Don Kafka, ToolWatch president and CEO. "We have created a system that uses Microsoft technology in the way it was designed to be used, to the benefit of our clients and their companies." ToolWatch Enterprise is an extremely advanced system that provides powerful management abilities to any organization that needs to manage tools and equipment.
The product is built on Microsoft's .NET framework, which ensures a high level of compatibility with other applications running on most Windows operating systems. Combined with Smart Client Technology, this framework provides a system that is easily deployed on user desktops and automatically updates itself when needed. Easily installed with minimal or no IT support, the software does not interrupt other important technology functions or require special setup.
ToolWatch Enterprise also employs Microsoft's SQL Compact Edition 3.5. Incorporating this technology into mobile and desktop client applications gives users a seamless experience whether they are connected to the service over the Internet or working offline. Users can work offline without reducing their productivity because a local view of their data is stored in an encrypted compact database directly on their computer or mobile device. The ability to effectively work offline is particularly important in the construction industry since employees often must work on remote jobsites with limited or no Internet access for extended periods of time.
Using the merge replication capabilities of Microsoft's SQL Server 2005 platform, ToolWatch Enterprise is able to manage data updates between individual subscribers and the hosted service through quick synchronizations that require minimal network bandwidth. Leveraging the clustering and mirroring capabilities of the SQL Server technology also enables ToolWatch to provide a highly available and scalable service to their customers.

Michael Norton Named Vice President of Sales for ToolWatch
Denver-based Tool-Tracking Software Company Adds Experienced Leader to Management Team
DENVER, COLO., April 14, 2009—ToolWatch Corporation, the construction industry's first tool management system provider, named Michael Norton vice president of sales. Norton joins ToolWatch with more than 20 years' experience in sales management, customer service, leadership and business development. ToolWatch's software solutions manage tools, equipment and materials both in the warehouse and on site to organizations of all sizes.
"I was very drawn to ToolWatch as the first company to emerge 18 years ago in the tool-tracking software space when this type of technology was nice to have, versus today when it is a must-have," said Norton. "I look forward to working with the sales team to ensure that every communication with our customers is focused on developing a relationship and offering the best solutions to ensure our customers' success. My philosophy is that selling is something you do with a customer instead of to the customer."
Norton's appointment by Don Kafka, chief executive officer, supports ToolWatch's goal to become a value-added partner with its construction customer base. The company's cornerstone tool management product, Enterprise, uniquely combines smart client deployment, SQL Server Compact Edition and SQL Server 2005 technologies. "During his career, Michael has demonstrated his leadership abilities and has strong experience building software companies," said Don Kafka. "His ability to merge his personal growth, training and sales experience with a strong technology background will inspire our company and sales force to create a work environment that directly benefits our customers' bottom lines."
Norton most recently worked as president for Ziglar, Inc. where he helped launch an online learning management system that doubled the company's revenue in just two years. He founded and launched Web sites SalesRepOnline.com and CanDoGo.com. Previously, he worked in senior-level roles in sales, consulting and training with companies including Siemens Medical Solutions, WebMD, Digital Reliance and BioTrax International.
Field productivity can make or break a job. That's why equipment that can't be found will often have to be purchased or rented. But unplanned purchases and rentals can quickly eat into the project's profitability. And lost or missing equipment can lead to project delays, unhappy clients, costly overtime and frustrated field personnel.
ToolWatch drastically improves your visibility into equipment inventory while increasing your productivity. It puts time back into your day by helping you get your equipment deployed, picked up, checked in and serviced faster—with no paperwork. And the accurate and timely equipment utilization information ToolWatch delivers helps you make better purchasing and asset management decisions.
The Tool Browser in ToolWatch enables you to have complete visibility of equipment across your organization. You can view tools and equipment at other warehouse facilities, job sites, even trucks. The browser not only tells you where equipment is located, but also when it's scheduled to return.
GPS Tracking enables you to instantly see big-ticket assets on a map. You can even select a specific type of item (compressors only, for example) in one geographic area. This helps you make fast, accurate and cost-effective decisions about dispatching equipment when and where needed.
Pick Tickets and Templates in ToolWatch allow you to communicate electronically with the warehouse. You can easily specify what equipment needs to be delivered to a project, and when it must be there. Templates also enable you to "memorize" typical orders so they can be automatically entered on a pick ticket or transfer, saving you valuable time.
And coming in 2009, requisition and scheduling functionality will help you schedule and commit equipment and materials to projects. This will enable you to do comprehensive resource planning and allow field personnel to electronically requisition equipment.
ToolWatch helps you and your people get more done. No wasted motion, no extra steps. Better yet, it's so well conceived that it eliminates the human desire to take shortcuts.
That's because ToolWatch was designed by construction industry insiders. People who understand that what you don't need is added complexity in your job. And what you could use are ways to make your day-to-day responsibilities easier, better, more efficient.
As a construction professional, getting the job done right and on time hinges on having access to the right tools, equipment and materials—when and where they're needed.
ToolWatch helps ensure that field personnel have the construction resources they need to perform at high levels. It virtually eliminates the paperwork that gets in the way of their job. And it helps reduce the stress and frustration that comes from long lines at the tool crib, incorrectly delivered items, missing components from toolstore, the classic "missing tool" drama.
Best part—ToolWatch may just be the best software program the field may never use! That's because the system works behind the scenes to make all of this happen for them, enabling the warehouse and tool crib to consistently deliver the right tools and materials on time.
That means no more wrong items because of inaccurate part numbers. No more missing components from tools. No more tool and equipment "mysteries" to solve.
Wouldn't that be something?
